Red Sox Rookies!
I learned a few things this year that I'll try to keep in mind next year, I promise. ^_~ Didn't have particularly good position, but I did what I could--and seeing the lovely Brita Meng Outzen dashing about (not to mention Dan Roche confirming for me that there's video!) made me feel better. Hopefully others (including [info]horsecrazyliza--great to meet you, finally!) were able to get better shots!



Chris Smith wins this year's best-dressed award, in a landslide!




Jeff Bailey in background. I know they were going for "cheerleader," but it makes me think "And now I cooooome to youuuuuuuu with ooooooooooopen aaaaaaarms..."


Chris Smith in closeup, because nothing says sexy like hairy cleavage.


Justin Masterson. Either a) they were afraid he'd be mortally offended by just about anything else they thought of, or b) under that he's wearing a gold lame thong which would be his entire outfit as soon as the bus pulled away.

Could not get a clear shot of George Kottaras.


Brita laughs at Jonathan Van Every. (Not naming names, but I wonder if the fact that a couple of the guys looked rather appealing last year made them go with the comical boobs for most of 'em this time...)


Devern Hansack. Couldn't get a clear shot on Dave Pauley but he was basically wearing the same thing.


JVE carefully carries his rack back to the bus.


Chris Carter. The dark roots really make this one.

Excellent theory on the comical breasts. Clay and Jacoby ruined it for them last year by looking so good!

Thanks! I wish I'd been able to do better, but wasn't quite sure where to be--and didn't exactly rush out, since I chatted with both Tru and his group (who were in the box next to mine!) and some Remy board friends.

Yay, Rookie Day! I kept wondering when this was going to happen; is it always the last road trip of the year? What did you learn this year? I definitely need to be there next year! A little disappointed with Justin's costume though, unless you're right about the thong. =P

Yeah, it's usually when they leave on the last road trip of the year. Sometimes it might depend on the schedule, though--when I shot the Padres rookies in 2006 (leaving Petco on their last road trip) the Pirates were also dressing their pups the same day, leaving Petco to fly home. Not sure if any of the boys from Toronto left Fenway in drag!

Yeah I think Chris Smith totally wins best dressed there. I think they were going for a High School Musical theme this year...and poor Hansack. This is like, what? The third time he's done this?

I would certainly understand Hansack getting a pass on too racy a costume for the sheer number of times he's done this!

I think Masterson's outfit is part of the same theme...I think he's dressed as the drama kid or something like that...I dunno, I'm ashamed that I even know ANYTHING about High School Musical.

Whoever came up with this idea is either a genius or has spent wayyy too much time watching this with their kids.

Oh oh oh! I would never have figured that out for myself, but now that I know there's a HSM theme, Masterson is definitely supposed to be Lucas Grabeel character, who always wears those hats and stuff. Here's an example:

Chris appeared to be enjoying himself. I'm not sure anything phases him! I'm a sucker for high socks and a high leg kick anyway, but I totally fell for him the day that he waved at me. ^_~

JVE just needs better shoes. Chris's figure really was alarmingly well-suited to that dress, but JVE had the best midsection for pulling off a cheerleader skirt, I think!

Did you see Ells? They made him wear the same outfit as Hansack and Pauley, but he had to carry a basketball too. He went straight to the bus, though. Sadly.

Yep. But it wasn't nearly as bad as last year--he just had to wear gym shorts and a cutoff sleeve shirt, like Hansack.

I am seriously disappointed we didn't get to see him in something revealing. ^_~ But partially pacified by the fact that Chris Smith had both really nice legs and a perfect attitude about the whole thing. The PawSox radio guys consistently singled Smith out as one of the most fun and outgoing guys on the team, and you could really see it today. And the funny thing is, given that all the other real rookies got the drag treatment, I'll bet Masterson would rather have been included in that group.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's not so much that I wanted to see him in a skirt... I wanted to see him in a wig! ^_^

Best rack goes to Chris Carter.

Looks like Georgie is sporting some big boobs, too. But he needs to work on the sock/shoe thing.

I'm not at all familiar with HS Musical. Is George supposed to be a teacher or something? Y'know, for a pretty guy, they made him alarmingly frumpy-looking. He would have rocked in a Chris Smith-like dress. ;-) Lowrie too. Funny how they put the two prettiest rookies into the most uninspired outfits. They need to let their wives take this over. LOL

I dunno, either they were afraid to put Justin in a dress ("YOU tell him! No, YOU tell him!") or they couldn't find anything that fit!

JVE does have seriously nice legs. They did let him off re the shoes, though. He really should be in go-go boots at the very least. Hee.

I'm disappointed in the local TV coverage. I googled around for the Boston TV stations, and only Dan Roche had something, and his offering (what I saw, anyway) was pretty sparse.

...those are absolutely BRILLIANT. I was looking forward to this since Spring Training, I think. I also think these shots make me want to adopt Chris Smith. He looks like he's having the time of his life!

I have a friend who loves both the Sox and HSM - and I am totally linking her immediately. (Because of her I actually recognized who Justin is supposed to be!)

I'm a huge fan of HSM and the Sox (and [info]1863_project's friend she mentioned), and I love this! From what I understand, Chris Smith is Sharpay Evans (which I agree is the best costume! Any guy dressed as Sharpay is funny to me though...), Justin Masterson is Sharpay's twin Ryan (The guy in my icon. *points up* Seeing my favorite rookie dressed up as my favorite HSM character is pretty funny/odd/awesome), Jed Lowrie is Gabriella Montez (which, oddly enough, fits- she is a nerdy bookworm, who, if the spoilers for the third movie are correct, ends up going to Stanford. I wonder if they knew she was the nerdy girl when they but Jed in that costume...they couldn't have known about the Stanford thing...), Devern Hansack and Dave Pauley are supposed to be Troy Bolton (Zac Efron's character) and Chad Danforth (Troy's best friend) (I don't know who is supposed to be who, but Troy and Chad dress like that), and everyone else is a Wildcat cheerleader(their mascot is the Wildcats). I can't figure out who George Kottaras is dressed as though- maybe the drama teacher, Ms. Darbus? She's the only character who would dress like that, but she's a blonde...

THAT'S what they should do next year: Rocky Horror Picture Show! And they could make all the rookies do the Timewarp! Or re-enact the whole movie and throw toast at them! Who's in charge of rookie hazing? I have letters to write.
